Montez Sweat didn’t need to be named SEC defensive lineman of the week after recording 1.5 sacks and seven tackles in Mississippi State’s win against Kentucky to get Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin’s attention.

Then in the third quarter, Sweat combined on a sack with Dez Harris after Sweat rushed inside — showing he can do that, too.
Sweat’s impact on MSU is obvious. He is tied with Jeffery Simmons for the team lead in sacks (3.5). He has 25 tackles and six tackles for a loss. His showing against Kentucky just made him stand out more because he was able to record more traditional stats like sacks. But Sweat has been in the backfield all season — he has often just ended up being a half-step away from getting a sack.
